  • Master Caption: General Dwight D. Eisenhower, Commander-in-chief, SHAPE, on an inspection tour of elements in the U.S. zone of Germany, visited units of the 4th infantry division in Hanau area today. General Eisenhower and other visiting high ranking U.S. military officials observed a demonstration in supporting artillery fire by members of the 20th field artillery BN (?) members of "B" company 4th engineer (C) BN, gave demonstrations in the construction of barbed wire entanglements and the laying of mine fields. An M-2 steel treadway (?), ponton ferry was constructed on the main river near Gross Auheim by members of "D" company, 4th engineers (?) for the benefit of the visiting dignitaries. Among the ranking military officials present for the occasion were: General Thomas T. Handy Commander-in-chief, Eucom. Lt. Gen. Manton S. Eddy Commander General, 7th Army. Maj. General Harlan N. Hartness Commanding General, 4th infantry division. and Brig. General John F. Uncles Commanding General, 4th division artillery.
