- Abstract
- Clayton Mark founded the Clayton Mark & Company in 1924 to manufacture steel products, specifically steel pipes and water well supplies. For more than half a century three generations of the Mark family worked to make the company the largest single employer in Evanston, with its products being used around the globe. During World War 2, immediately after Pearl Harbor, the company converted all of its plant with the exception of its well supplies division to the manufacturing of products necessary for the United States military. Clayton Mark & Company's products were used in oil wells, water wells, house construction, and the making of automobiles, bicycles, and furniture The hundreds of employees enjoyed some of the finest working conditions and benefits in the country.
