Abstract
  • Chancellor Lester Wolfson addresses a crowd in the Northside West auditorium during a dedication ceremony for the building in 1972. Wolfson was the first chancellor of Indiana University South Bend, serving from 1969 to 1987. The limestone Indiana University Center opened in September, 1961, and featured an 800-seat auditorium with a fully equipped stage and large dressing rooms. It was officially retitled Northside Hall in 1966. The concrete-faced five-story addition known as Northside West was built from 1970 to 1972 to add classroom, laboratory, library and office space, as well as a 300-seat performance space for music and theater productions and large lecture classes.
