Caption
  • Louis Gossett, Jr. (center) in his Emmy Award-winning role as Fiddler, the American-born slave in ROOTS who befriends the rebellious young African, Kunta Kinte, joins his fellow slaves at the Reynolds' plantation in Virginia for a musical spree. The rich dimension which Gossett brings to this sensitive role moved Alex Haley, author of the landmark book upon which the program is based, to comment: "Louis Gossett Jr.'s portrayal of fiddler went beyond any conception of the character I ever had. He gave him the warmth and humor and understanding of life that I wanted the character to have but just couldn't get down in writing." ROOTS will air on KGO-TV's "The 3:30 Movie," weekdays, Nov. 5-13 and Nov. 15 and 16, 3:30-5pm on Channel 7.
