Abstract
  • Clayton Mark Jr., a member of the prominent Clayton Mark family, was an inventor, engineer, and a great problem solver. Throughout his life Clayton was involved in the development and patenting of many inventions either solo or with others (e.g., Clarence Mark, John F. Windsor, Wilfred Sykes). Examples of the wide-ranging inventions Clayton was involved with include the electro-galvanized coating that enabled Mark Manufacturing Company to enter the conduit field, the Mark-Kote hot galvanized coating, and packings for plungers and plunge rods used in the operation of hydraulic operated cylinders. Perhaps the patent that had the most impact on the industry was the development of the direct current method of welding tubing. During WWI Clayton was employed as a civilian engineer for a submarine base. For decades Clayton worked with his father and his brothers in the Mark Manufacturing Company and the Clayton Mark & Company, as well as with Wellington Quirk in Evanston making electric storage and electric vehicle batteries (1916-1923). When his father, Clayton Mark died in 1936 he took on the duties of Executor of the estate and continued to work with his brothers at the Clayton Mark & Company as Vice President and Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors among other roles. While attending the University of Illinois where he majored in chemical engineering, Clayton met and later married Gladys Stevens the daughter of the local minister for the Universalist Unitarian Church, for which she played the organ. She majored in music. They had two children, Clayton Mark III and Stephen Mark (photographer of most of the images in this collection). Clayton Mark Jr. passed away in 1948 and is buried in the Mark Mausoleum in the Lake Forest Cemetery.
