Description
  • A collection of letters and devotional tracts of over 40 Hutterite Anabaptist leaders, dated 1566 and titled "Epistel Buech, mit fleisz Geschriben von vilen streitern und zeugen gottes, allenn frumen zum Trosst" (fol. [2*]). Written by several hands. Said to be the earliest surviving compilation of its kind and "the prototype of all later similar Anabaptist codices" (Friedmann, Hutterite Studies, 302). Compilation has been attributed to Kaspar Braitmichel (d. 1573) by Eberhard Arnold and Friedmann, although later suggested to have been written by Caspar Artlof, a clothier, near Slavkov u Brna [Austerlitz], Czech Republic. The first leaf is bound out of place
  • it should precede the "Register," which it describes. Diagram on fol. 240. See Friedmann for register of contents.
