The Peripheral Manuscripts Project is hosted at Indiana University Bloomington and was generously supported by a 2020 Council on Library and Information Resources Hidden Collections grant and two grants from Indiana University: a Grant-in-Aid from the Office of the Vice Provost of Research and a Bridge Funding grant from the Office of the Vice President of Research. The project seeks to bring attention to important medieval manuscripts in the American Midwest using a consortium model that includes twenty-two institutional collaborators. By digitizing, describing, and hosting images and item descriptions of regional manuscripts together in one place, the project makes discoverable multiple collections that holding institutions are unable to digitize, describe, or host on their own. Altogether, these collections hold an enormous wealth of medieval manuscripts that our project seeks to showcase. Indiana University Libraries’ Digital Collection Services has scanned or photographed partner holdings, and researchers at IU Bloomington, Loyola University Chicago, and Saint Mary’s College have collaborated to create new descriptions or expand existing metadata for these objects. Project Directors for the 2020 CLIR grant were: Elizabeth K. Hebbard (PI) and Sarah L. Noonan, Michelle Dalmau, and Ian Cornelius (Co-PIs).
