IU Northwest Student Newspapers

This collection contains digitized issues of student newspapers from the Indiana University Northwest Archives. IU Northwest is the result of growth and change that began in 1921 when Indiana University offered its first formal classes in Lake County as part of a program sponsored by the Gary Public School System. In 1959, the campus, then referred to as the Gary Center of Indiana University, found its permanent location in the Glen Park neighborhood. During this transition to Glen Park, a new student newspaper called the Centerion was established, which ran from 1959-1962. In 1963, the campus officially became Indiana University Northwest. During this time, the student newspaper became The Northwest Phoenix, running from 1964-2010. However, during the 1968-1969 school year, the newspaper changed its name to the Northwest Student and then switched back to the Northwest Phoenix. The Redhawk Review ran from 2010-2012. During this time, the printed newspaper was discontinued. The Indiana University Bicentennial Archives Development and Deployment Project and Indiana University Digital Collections Services made this digitization initiative possible.
