Caption
  • Ralph Bunche: An American Odyssey, a new documentary film premiering Friday, February 2, 2001 at 9 p.m. ET (check local listings) on PBS as a feature of Black History Month, tells the story of the life and historic achievements of Dr. Ralph Johnson Bunche (1903-1971). The two-hour special, produced and directed by Emmy Award-winning filmmaker William Greaves, recalls the compelling personal story of the legendary African American scholar turned statesman, and the contributions he made to international diplomacy, decolonization of the world, peacekeeping, and human rights in pre-civil rights America. Born into a working-class family in Detroit, Ralph Bunche rose to become Under-Secretary General of the United Nations, the second most powerful official in the U.N. Secretariat. In 1950, he was awarded a Nobel Prize for Peace, becoming the first person of color anywhere in the world to receive this prestigious award. Based on the biography of the same name by Sir Brian Urquhart. A presentation of South Carolina Educational Television. Photo left: Bunche at the UN in 1963.
