The College of Wooster Libraries Special Collections houses seven illuminated manuscripts circa 14th-15th century, including two excellent Book of Hours. The English Horae has been studied by faculty member, Kara A. Morrow, who believes the work to possibly be one of the texts owned by the well-known collector Sir Robert Cotton to have survived the fire at his Ashburnham House. The other Book of Hours (Bayeux, third quarter of the 15th century) was donated by Dr. Vandersall (Class of 1955), Professor Emerita of Art History at the University of Colorado, as part of the celebration of her 55th class reunion. As a student, Dr. Vandersall was encouraged to pursue her career in Art History, so she was happy to donate a gift that might benefit other Art History students here at the college.
The manuscript collection has been used widely on campus to support Art History, the Museum Studies & Archives Pathways program, and Book Arts lectures. Also, these manuscripts have been studied by national and international scholars.
Arrangements can be made to view any of the texts in person.
